Feeling The ‘Pregnant Blues’: Shared Emotions During Pregnancy
2 Min Read
Fact Checked
Pregnancy is known to be an entirely magical connection between the mother and the baby. The experience and the bond are special yet reciprocal.
Do babies feel their mother’s emotions in the womb?
Since pregnancy is largely a transitional stage, the mother, in particular, goes through a plethora of emotions, both good and bad, and it is only natural that these emotions arise. But while this happens, it is essential to know that the feelings are felt by the baby as well. Research suggests that the emotions are felt at the same intensity by the baby as the mother feels them.
During the gestational period, there is usually quite a lot of communication which happens, and the signals are sent to the baby in different ways, i.e., it can be via the sound of the heartbeat or the chemical and hormonal signals from the mother through the placenta, and these signals are also often the ones which are directly related to the mother’s emotional state.
And so, if the mother has been experiencing feelings of sadness which might be immediate or prolonged, the same will be transferred to the baby. In another case, if the mother has been having too many mood swings, the short outburst of happiness will be felt by the baby, followed by quick negative emotions, and this imbalance can, in return, affect the baby’s development. In short, the mother’s emotional state affects the baby’s development for a significant portion of life – before and after birth.
One of the things which can act as a precautionary measure to protect the mental health of the mother as well as the baby during the gestational period would be to strive to maintain a balanced emotional state. This can be achieved with self-help or self-regulatory practices or by seeking appropriate help/treatment. Social activities and preparing for motherhood, like having baby showers and setting up the nursery, can all contribute to the urge to “nest” and facilitate positive emotions.
