Paronychia is an infection of the tissue near a nail, most often a fingernail. It's caused by injury, irritation, cuticle damage or continually wet hands. The tissue adjacent to the nail bed can be painful, red and swollen. There can be pus in may cases and it may have to be drained as part of the treatment.
