Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that affects almost everyone and is commonly called a pimple.

An acne breakout takes place when hair follicles get clogged with oil and dirt from the skin and dead skin cells. Hormones and genes have a big role to play when it comes to acne vulgaris. An excess of androgen increases the oil production of the skin. Excess oil and dead skin cells get trapped in the skin pores and create a blockage thus causing a pimple. Bacteria can also be responsible for the breakout of pimples.

It can affect people of all ages but is more common in young adults and teenagers.

• Symptoms include the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the face, neck, chest, and back.
• People may experience the following:
• Pain - In and around the red bumps
• Inflamed spots with pus
• Treatment
• Self-care
• Keeping the affected areas clean and dry can prevent acne to some extent and
• reduce the pain associated with it. Avoid touching/squeezing or scratching. Use products that are free from chemicals and follow a healthy diet along with a skin care routine.

Medications
Over-the-counter medicines and creams can help, but the results start showing only after 6-8 weeks. Antibiotics might also be recommended in case the pimples are caused due to bacterial infection.

Specialist
Systemic retinoid or hormonal therapy may also be recommended in some cases. A medicine or therapy that works for someone might not work for others; it it thus better to consult a dermatologist.
