About:

Common benign nevi are harmless collections of colored cells that typically appear as small brown, tan, or pink spots.

Most adults have about 10 and 40 common moles or benign nevi. [1]

- Lab tests or imaging not required
- Might perform a skin biopsy
- Chronic: can last for years or exists lifelong
- Can exist at birth or appear later

A benign (melanocytic) nevus is usually the result of a non-cancerous disorder of pigment-producing skin cells (melanin). Commonly called birthmarks or moles. Its size is often large and feels rough, flat, or raised. Rarely can a benign nevus become cancerous.

Watch out for a rapid change in the mole, particularly in the size or if the mole becomes irregular around the borders.

People may experience

Pain, itching, bleeding, ulceration or any irritation which are very important to report to the doctor.

Treatment:

Self-care: It’s a bad idea to pick, poke, or cut a benign nevus. No tampering.

Medications: Most common benign nevus doesn’t require any medical intervention. However, it may be removed surgically.
