A small white bump typically occurring on the cheeks, the nose, and the eyes and is seen in groups, occurring due to keratin overload beneath the skin.
Typically, about 40-50% of newborn babies are affected by milia on their face within a month of being born. (1)
- It is self diagnosable.
- Lab tests or imaging are not required and its diagnosis is made on a clinical basis.
- Can happen to both men and women but it is more commonly seen in infants and children.
- Can be both acute and chronic but it is usually acute in infants and disappears within two to four weeks.
Athough facial milia is self-evident, its diagnosis is made on a clinical basis by a dermatologist or a cosmetologist. Facial milia is usually non-itchy and painless but can get red and itchy overtime with this use of rough sheets or due to clothing friction. It is more commonly seen in infants, but adults too can get affected by it.
