It is a common pigmented skin lesion, occurring during adulthood.
Also known as a birthmark, beauty mark and mole

These can be found anywhere on the body, generally in sun-exposed areas, and are brown, smooth as well as slightly raised. Usually, nevus doesnt require any treatment. They may turn into melanoma or other skin cancers in rare cases.

Causes

The exact cause of nevus is unknown. The number of moles a person has generally depends upon:
- genetic factors
- exposure to sun and
- immune status

Classification of nevi:
- Congenital melanocytic nevus
- Acquired melanocytic nevus

Symptoms

Self-diagnosable:
Moles can be found anywhere on the body usually in sun-exposed areas. They are usually brown, slightly raised and smooth. Moles may be flat or protruding and are generally round in shape. People may experience darkening of the skin or small bumps.

Other symptoms of moles may include:
- It changes size, shape and color
- A new mole develops in a person above 40 years of age
- It appears different from already existing moles on the body
- It is bleeding, itchy or crusty
Skin lesions having the above characteristics is examined using Dermatoscopy.

Treatment

Self-care:
Application of sunscreen as well as wearing sun protective clothing is recommended. Harmful UV rays can damage skin over time.

Medicines:
In rare cases, there are chances of surgery in order to exclude cancer or if the mole is a nuisance.
