Condition which is characterized by a thickening of the skin on the palms and the soles of one’s feet.

Exact prevalence not known - the occurrence of Type 1 palmoplantar keratoderma is estimated to be about 35 families worldwide.[1]

A benign skin condition. It can be spread out (which is diffused keratoderma) or punctuated (appearance of tiny bumps around). It can last from childhood to adulthood. Keratoderma that is inherited may be caused due to infections, skin disorders or certain medications.

Ages affected Prevalent among both children and adults; no particular age group is particularly vulnerable.

Symptoms:

Self diagnosable
Any symptoms of thickened skin on palms and feet should be reported immediately to the doctor. A detailed examination is needed to diagnose the condition.

People may experience
Abnormally thickened skin on hands and feet
Skin thickening leading to sole palm
Appearance of small lumps in some cases

Treatment

Self-care: Good hygiene should be followed. Vitamin creams should be applied properly to the affected areas.

Medications: Doctor may first advise skin biopsy or dermoscopy to understand the cause behind the condition. Vitamin ointments, medicines, cutting away layers of skin and salt water soaks may be recommended. Surgery is required in a few cases to remove the excess skin.
