Pityriasis Versicolor: The fungal infection

Pityriasis Versicolor is a common fungal infection that causes small, discolored patches of skin. It is also called Tinea Versicolor. It is caused by the yeast that naturally lives on the skin, and when it grows out of control, it appears as a rash causing the disease.

The yeast can be found on the skin of more than 90% of adults. But it does not cause any problem.[1]

Pityriasis Versicolor:

- May not require lab tests or imaging
- Is not contagious
- Occurs mostly in teens and young adults starting from the age of six

The spots may not be visible during cool weather. These usually get worse during warm and humid weather.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of Pityriasis Versicolor include:
- White, pink, red, or brown patches that can be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin color
- Spots that do not tan like the other parts of skin do
- Mostly found on neck, chest, back, and arms
- Mild itching

Treatment

Self-care: For mild cases of Pityriasis Versicolor, antifungal lotions, creams, ointment, or shampoos can be used. These include topical agents like Clotrimazole, MIconazole, Selenium Sulfide, Terbinafine, and Zinc Pyrithione Soap. Besides this, oily skin products and tight clothing should be avoided, sun exposure should be avoided, or if it at all you need to go out, put on sunscreen.

Medication: If Pityriasis Versicolor is severe, then the doctor may prescribe topical preparations cream gel or shampoo, oral solution, Itraconazole tablets, capsules or oral solution, Selenium Sulfide 2.5% lotion or shampoo.
