About
Seborrheic dermatitis capitis is a very common skin condition that causes scaly patches, red skin, and stubborn dandruff.
Men (3%) are affected more frequently than women (2.6%) in all age groups.(1)
Seborrheic dermatitis capitis is
- Treatable by a medical professional
- May or may not require diagnosis
- Laboratory tests and imaging are not required
- Can be cured, but symptoms may come back
Some factors such as Parkinson’s disease, depression, and weakened immune system can lead to the aggravation of this skin disorder. Seborrheic dermatitis capitis can be of two types: (1) Infantile seborrheic dermatitis, which affects infants of less than 3 months. It usually resolves by the age of 6 to 12 and (2) Adult seborrheic dermatitis, which begins in later adolescent period.
Symptoms
The common symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis capitis are as follows:
- Skin flakes on the scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard, or mustache.
- Patches of greasy skin that is covered with flaky white or yellow scales.
- Red skin.
- May or may not be itchy.
The symptoms can also be visible on other body parts too like, below breasts, in the groin, on buttocks, around the navel, in the middle part of the chest, and in skin folds ( arms and legs).
Treatment
Self-care: The best approach to control the symptoms depends on the skin type. If regular shampoo does not help then it is advisable to try over-the-counter dandruff shampoo. Other than this, applying mineral oil or olive for an hour and then combing and washing it off, and avoiding styling of hair and products that contain alcohol can also prove to be effective methods to cure seborrheic dermatitis.
Medication: Depending upon the intensity of seborrheic dermatitis, the doctor may prescribe creams and lotions containing calcineurin inhibitors tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, antifungal gels, creams, or shampoos.
Specialists: Do consult a dermatologist if symptoms indicate other kinds. mfine will keep providing its readers wide range of information about medical conditions, you can also come on board for a holistic treatment.
