About

Striae distensae is a common finding in adolescents of both genders, particularly females primarily during pregnancy.

Striae are seen in 90% of pregnant women, as a result of hormonal factors like adrenocortical hormones, estrogen, and relaxin along with increased lateral stress on connective tissue. [1]

- It is also due to prolonged heavy weight lifting.
- Mostly observed on the thighs and knees.

Striae may also occur in HIV-positive people receiving protease inhibitors, such as indinavir. Ulceration of striae has been reported in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Symptoms :

- Indented streaks or lines in the skin.
- Pink, red, black, blue or purple streaks.
- Bright streaks that fade into a lighter color.
- Streaks on the abdomen, hips, breasts, buttocks or thighs.
- Streaks covering large areas of the body.

People may experience :

Striae shows progression of clinical appearances, commencing as flat, pink lesions which broaden, lengthen and appear in a violaceous color. The color gradually fades to leave a white, depressed scar.

Treatment :

Self Care : Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, and the lotions may help with the itching that may accompany striae formation.

Medication:
No evidence has existed that any treatment removes striae once they have appeared, although in a small, and in a prospective trial, women who applied a certain medication to abdominal stretch marks and during pregnancy did note significant improvement in the clinical appearance of the striae.
