Insulin Resistance Syndrome

What is insulin resistance syndrome?

Insulin resistance refers to when cells in the muscles, liver and fat do not have a good response to insulin. Owing to this lack of response, the pancreas starts producing more insulin which affects the blood sugar level. Insulin resistance syndrome includes many problems including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Ideally, to check for the symptoms, it is required that you do blood tests to check for the increase in blood sugar levels because of the resistance to insulin.

About 15-30 % of people with prediabetes are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within 5 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This condition:

  • Requires a medical diagnosis.
  • Is diagnosed with lab tests and image tests.
  • Can be chronic.
  • Can happen to men, women, and children.

Insulin resistance increases the risk of developing prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. With insulin resistance, the cells in a person’s body do not usually respond to insulin. Genetic, ageing, and body fats are some of the driving forces for this type of disorder.

There are a number of risk factors pertaining to insulin resistance syndrome:

  • Can lead to obesity, overweight and increased belly fat on the body
  • Affects sleep and causes sleep apnea and disorders
  • Can worsen issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome and fatty liver diseases
  • An inactive lifestyle can lead to hormonal disorders and sometimes even gestational diabetes

Ages Affected

Those belonging to the age group of 3-13 years rarely develop this disorder. Those who belong to the age group of 14-18 often develop this disorder, and those who are above 18 years of age are more prone to this disorder.
