Loss Of Height
Causes of Loss of Height: Here is what we should know
About
The general decrease in height is usually because of aging.
According to a French study, researchers measured 8,600 women above 60 years of age and found that they overestimated their height by an inch on an average as compared to their tallest recalled height.[1]
- May not be self-treatable
- Usually, self-diagnosable
- Laboratory tests and imaging may be required
Causes
The most common factor for shrinkage is aging. Other factors are as follows:
- Discs between vertebrae in the spine dehydrate and compress.
- Compression fracture due to loss of bone density.
- Osteoporosis.
- Gradual flattening of the arches of feet.
On an average, people lose around 0.25 to 0.5 inch every decade after crossing 40 or 50 years of age, with the loss increasing in later ages.
In general, women lose more height than men.
Symptoms
More often, there are no symptoms. Some of the observed symptoms are as follows:
Self-diagnosable: Back pain and limited mobility
People may experience: Chronic back pain
Also common: Painful fractures in the hip, spine, and thighs
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis: The doctor may check for the reason of chronic back pain. X-ray, CT-scan, and rarely an MRI may be suggested to examine the changes of vertebrae in the spine.
Treatment
Self-care: Doing regular exercise, taking a diet rich in calcium and vitamin-D, and other bone-healthy nutrients help in preventing height loss. In addition, avoiding smoking and alcohol may help.
Medication: Take vitamins and supplements as prescripted by the doctor. Consumption of calcium-rich diet and supplements can also help.
Specialists: For further concern, contact a doctor or a physician. At mfine, you will receive a holistic treatment plan for optimum health.
