What is Colonoscopy?
What is Colonoscopy?
A Colonoscopy is used to examine the large intestine in conditions like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or changes in bowel movements.
Why is a Colonoscopy recommended?
A doctor can ask you to take a colonoscopy if a colon and rectum cancer is suspected. This can be found in people older than 50 years. The accompanying symptoms are blood in stools, persistent cramps or gas, weakness, and fatigue. If these symptoms are identified, the doctor does an examination through a colonoscopy to find any polyps and removes them.
Preparing for Colonoscopy
- Make sure that you provide your overall medical history regarding lungs, diabetes, pregnancy, heart, and other allergies to your doctor before the procedure.
- To examine the presence of polyps your colon has to stay clean. Restrict your diet intake for at least 24 hours prior to the procedure. Avoid solid foods and take clear liquids like water and sports drinks.
- You will be given prescribed laxatives in order to empty your bowel for the doctor to have clear visibility during the process.
- Make arrangements for someone to take you home after this since you will be given anesthesia during the examination.
Understanding the results of Colonoscopy
This procedure takes half an hour and you will stay sedated for sometime after that. You may experience cramping or passing gas which is normal. Avoid other medications like blood thinners. Puncture of the colon and the resulting bleeding can be a rare side effect. But reach out for doctor’s help if you experience any bleeding or abdominal pain with fever.
