What is LIVER PANEL?
What is LIVER PANEL?
A complete checkup of the liver is termed as a liver panel or a hepatic function test. It provides results on:
Albumi, Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate transaminase (AST) and Total protein
When is LIVER PANEL test recommended?
It is usually recommended in the following cases:
- Color of the skin is yellowish and the whites of your eyes, dark-colored urine, light-colored or black and bloody bowel movements.
- A family history of liver disease
- Exposed to the hepatitis virus
- Taking medicine that can cause liver damage
Preparing for LIVER PANEL
- Always provide a complete medical history for self as well as family.
- GIve complete report to the doctor about all medications and supplements you use.
- Fasting of 8-10 hours is desirable.
- Blood is collected from the vein of an arm.
Understanding LIVER PANEL results
Normal ranges:
- Bilirubin: 0-1 mg/dl
- ALT: 10-55 U/L
- AST: 10-40 U/L
- ALP: 45-115 U/L
- Serum Albumin: 3.5-5.5g/dl
Mild hepatic failure: 1-3 times of ALT and AST
Moderate hepatic failure: 20 times of ALT and AST
Severe hepatic failure: >20 times of ALT and AST
- Chances of error in reports increase during virus, alcohol, certain medicines, and obesity
- The numbers vary with gender, built-up, ethnicity, pregnancy and consumption of aromatic medicines.
