Metabolic encephalopathy (ME) is a disorder where abnormalities of brain function are caused by processes of extracerebral origin because of the chemical imbalance in the blood.

ME is most frequent in elderly people who have suffered from chronic illnesses, prolonged stay in bed previously. It is more common in people aged above 70 years.(1)

10. Coma
11. Severe confusion and disorientation

Treatment

Its treatment depends on the cause and the type.
Self care: A healthy diet, nutritional supplements, smoking, and alcohol consumption cessation are recommended.

Medications: Antiepileptic medications and vitamin B1 supplements are helpful to treat symptoms or treat the underlying cause.
