Proteinuria
All you need to know about Proteinuria
About
When the level of protein increases to an abnormal amount in the urine, it is known as proteinuria and is often a sign of kidney disease.
About 2-5% of adolescent population suffers from orthostatic proteinuria. [1]
- Testing is required for diagnosis
- Treatment is available
- Can be chronic
A significant amount of protein cannot be passed through healthy kidneys, but proteins such as albumin may leak from the blood to the kidney in case the filters get damaged by kidney disease. Overproduction of protein by the body may also cause proteinuria. It can also be caused by high blood pressure and diabetes, both of which can cause damage to the kidneys.
Symptoms
Symptoms of proteinuria may include frothy, foamy, or bubbly looking urine when you use the bathroom. Symptoms may also include swelling in feet, hands, face, or abdomen as well as nausea and vomiting.
As the quantity protein in the urine is very less, there may be no symptoms in the early stages.
Treatment
Self-care: Self-care treatment includes eating fruits, vegetables, grains; drinking lots of water; eating more onion and garlic in meals; restricting salt intake; exercising regularly; consuming more fish; reducing alcohol intake; maintaining a healthy weight; avoiding drinking soda; and reducing stress levels.
Medications: Medications to control high blood pressure and diabetes may be prescribed when the patient is suffering from them.
Specialists: It is advisable to consult a specialist. At mfine, you will receive a holistic treatment plan for your optimum health.
