Trich or Trichomoniasis is caused by a tiny one-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It spreads from person to person through genital contact during sexual intercourse. In women, it causes an infection in the urethra or vagina or both. In men, the infection is caused only in the urethra. This condition often has no symptoms, but when they do occur, it is typically 5-28 days after the infection.

Symptoms:

Women may experience the following:
1. Painful urination or pain during intercourse.
2. Genital redness or swelling
3. vaginal bleeding or spotting
4. Change in amount, odor, and color of the discharge.
Men may experience the following:
1. Discharge from the urethra
2. Burning during urination or after ejaculation
3. Urge to frequently urinate

Treatment

Self-care: Having safer sex, avoiding intercourse for a week or using latex condoms is recommended to prevent trichomoniasis.
Medications: Oral antibiotics are helpful.
