Urticarial vasculitis is a type of vasculitis that affects the skin, causing hives or red patches due to swelling of the small blood vessels.
Vasculitis itself is a very rare disease. Fewer than 1 million cases of it are reported every year in India. [2]

The cause of most cases is unknown which might be associated with various diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjögren’s syndrome. Few types of cancers including leukemia, colon and pancreatic cancers, and infections like Hepatitis B and C can cause this type of vasculitis. So can some drugs and antibiotics, ACE inhibitors are used for treating high blood pressure, and certain diuretics.
Ages affected – 0-5 – Rarely; between 6-60 and above – Often

Symptoms:

Requires medical diagnosis
Symptoms may include itching, pain and a burning feeling
People may experience:
Pain areas: in the abdomen, joints, or muscles
Whole body: fatigue or fever
Skin: rashes or ulcers
Also common: joint swelling, the sensation of pins and needles, shortness of breath, or weight loss
If severe symptoms appear, a medical professional should be consulted right away

Treatment may require steroids:

Some forms improve on their own while some require medication.

Steroids are prescribed to reduce inflammation, immunosuppressive drugs to reduce immune responses and blood transfusion.
