Symptoms:

A sliding hernia is self-diagnosable. Symptoms include:
- Severe pain in the chest or abdomen.
- Belching.
- Trouble swallowing.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Unable to have a bowel movement or pass gas.
- Heartburn related to gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

Treatment:

Self-care:
- Changing the diet: Eat smaller meals several times a day instead of three large meals.
- Avoid eating meals or snacks a few hours before going to bed.

Medications:
- Requires an x-ray and an endoscopy.
- Over-the-counter antacids, H2-receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors.
- Laparoscopic surgery in case of complications.
