Adenomyosis is a condition in which endometrial tissues that usually line the uterus grow within the uterine wall.

Adenomyosis occurs in 1 out of 10 women.[1]

Adenomyosis:

Adenomyosis usually occurs late in the childbearing years and disappears after menopause. Also, women who have had prior uterine surgery may be at a higher risk of developing this disease.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of Adenomyosis are:
- Prolonged menstrual cramps
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Longer menstrual cycle
- Blood clots during menstrual bleeding
- Pain during sex
- Tenderness in the abdominal area

Treatment

Self-care: Although this situation cannot be cured without medical intervention, pelvic pain and cramping can be eased by soaking in a warm bath, using heating pads on the abdomen, and taking anti-inflammatory medication.
Medication: Adenomyosis usually goes away after menopause. So the treatment completely depends upon how close the woman is to that stage of life. Doctors may suggest anti-inflammatory drugs, or hormone medications, vaginal rings, and combined estrogen-progestin birth control pills might lessen heavy bleeding and pain. They may also suggest for a Uterine Artery Embolization, which is used to help shrink fibroids (tiny particles used to block the blood vessels that provide blood flow to the adenomyosis). In severe cases, Hysterectomy i.e. surgery to remove the uterus can be recommended.
