Candidiasis of vulva and vagina
About
Candidiasis of vulva and vagina refers to the infection caused by yeast and it leads to uncomfortable conditions like excessive itchiness and irritation.
Candidiasis of Vagina is the second most common infection after the bacterial infection. [1]
- Although it is not a sexually transmitted disease, it may get transmitted during the first sexual activity while being affected.
- Lab tests are usually preferred to confirm the presence of this infection.
It is a common condition which affects 3 out of 4 women at least once in their lifetime. The occurrence may be more in certain cases.
Symptoms
- Excessive Itching
- Experiencing pain during sexual intercourse
- Redness of vaginal tissues
- Irritation or pain while passing urine
- Swelling of vaginal tissues can be seen in severe cases
- White discharge from vagina
- Cracks in vaginal wall in some cases
Treatment
Self-care:
- Washing with water to cleanse properly
- Warm water bath
- Drying the area properly
Medication:
Candidiasis is easily treated with medications depending on the severity of the condition.
It can be treated with an antifungal medicine in two ways:
- Medicine is to be applied inside the vagina.
- Alternatively, Fluconazole can also be given orally as a single dose.
A longer treatment is required in the cases where
- there is more severe infection or
- the infections that do not go away or
- for cases where it re-occurs too frequently.
In such cases, the doses of fluconazole have to be repeated instead of a single dose or other medicines such as nystatin or boric acid have to be applied in the vagina.
