Your Guide To Post MTP Bleeding

About:

Post-abortion bleeding and menstruation are two different things.

On average, women bleed for 9 -14 days after doing a medical abortion. [1]

- Post MTP (medical termination of pregnancy) bleeding may last for 1 to 2 weeks
- Bleeding may be heavy, moderate, light or not at all

Its normal to get post MTP bleeding which might look like menstruation, but it isnt the same. The bleeding is the result of the uterus expelling tissue from the pregnancy. Some people dont get post MTP bleeding.

Bleeding may be spotty, dark brown, and include clots. The flow is typically heavier with medical abortion than a surgical abortion.

Post MTP bleeding will be more when exercising and less when at rest. Discharge may be mucus-like, non-bloody and range from a brown to black color. Menstrual-like cramps are normal. Also, nausea, headache and mood swings.

Treatment:

Self-care: Avoid tampons or menstrual cups for at least two weeks during post MTP bleeding. Use sanitary napkins or period underwear, deep uterine massage, heat compress and rest.

Medications: Painkillers to relieve cramps, antibiotics, medicines to shrink the uterus.
