Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome and complications
About
A damage to kidneys that causes them to release too much protein into the urine is called nephrotic syndrome.
Nephrotic syndrome is responsible for 12% of kidney failure in adults and 20% in children.[1]
- Males are more susceptible than females
- Is treatable by a medical professional
- Requires a medical diagnosis
- Lab tests required
- Can last for years or can be life long
- Requires a urine test
Kidneys have small blood vessels called glomerulus that help in filtering protein and other substances while extra water and waste products are filtered into the urine. Nephrotic syndrome happens when glomeruli are damaged and can't filter properly. It can happen due to many reasons such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition in which glomerulus become scarred from disease or genetic defect. It can also happen due to membranous nephropathy, a condition in which walls of glomeruli thicken, and diabetes is also one of the causes.
Symptoms
- Swelling in ankles and feet, and around eyes
- Foamy urine
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Weight gain from fluid buildup
- Appetite loss
- High cholesterol
- Low levels of albumin in blood
Treatment
Self-Care:
- Limit the intake of salt to prevent swelling and control blood pressure.
- Try to eat a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
- Doctors might recommend drinking less fluid to control swelling.
