An ischemic stroke that disrupts blood flow to the brain.

More than 10% of patients with stroke due to cerebral infarction are aged 55 years or younger. [1]

Cerebral infarction occurs when the following conditions take place - the blood vessels become blocked or they may leak outside of the vessel walls. These conditions deprive the brain of getting vital nutrients and oxygen, resulting in cerebral infarction. It’s important to note that these occurrences vary in severity, and only a one-third results in death.

Self-diagnosable:

A physical examination of the head area reveals abnormal pupil dilation and light reaction. There’s lack of eye movement on the opposite side. If infarction occurs on the left side brain, the speech will be slurred. Reflexes may be aggravated as well.

People may experience:

Aphasia, dizziness, limb numbness, headache and clumsiness may occur.

Treatment:

Self-care: Immediately consult a doctor. Patients treated 6 hours within the onset of cerebral infarction make a good recovery.

Medications/Procedures: Thrombolytic drugs are often used in therapy of cerebral infarction. Patients intolerant to thrombolytic drugs need mechanical embolectomy. Thrombectomy or thrombolysis helps to remove the blockage.
