What is a Neck of Femur Fracture?

The fracture of neck of the femur in elderly patients due to a direct fall on the hip or severe trauma inflicted in younger patients.

The important issue with femoral neck fractures is that the blood supply to the fractured portion of bone is often damaged at the time of injury. [1]

- Affects both men and women.
- MRI, CT scan, bone scan, and X-ray are usually required.
- Is physically painful.

Femoral neck fracture along with peritrochanteric fractures are the most common proximal femur fractures in elderly people. Physical trauma because of a fall or accident is the general cause for femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. Being over the age of 50 years, having bone cancer or osteoporosis increases the patient’s risk to this fracture.
Ages affected - below 60 years - less often; above 60 years - most often.

Symptoms

Self-diagnosable
Symptoms include pain in the groin and hip, when pressure is applied or hip is rotated.

People may experience
Pain - Intense pain while walking or trying to stand.

Treatment

Medications: Over-the-counter NSAIDs, prescription opioids and bisphosphonates can be taken to relieve the pain.

Surgery - After consulting an orthopedic surgeon, surgery is the most common and effective method to treat neck of femur fractures in elderly people. Internal fixation with screws/pins, hip hemiarthroplasty, and total hip arthroplasty are the best and highly advised procedures.
