Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is a conditioned caused due to inflammation in the tendons around the elbow. Repetitive motions such as swinging a tennis racquet or other activities can inflame the tendons resulting in pain and tenderness.

Symptoms

Self-diagnosable - Pain, and stiffness may be experienced in the elbow and forearm region. Doctor may require an X-ray or MRI for confirmation.
Pain areas are outside the elbow, forearms, and wrist
Progressive pain tends to worsen over time
Burning sensation around the elbow
Weak grip – Strength and firmness of grip may be reduced

Treatment

Self-care: Rest the hand and apply ice to counter swelling.

Medicines: Over-the-counters NSAIDs and pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help with pain and inflammation. In severe cases, seek doctor’s prescription.

Elbow brace: An elbow brace can be used to limit activity and rest the muscles.
Physical therapy: Exercises and treatment that help strengthen the muscles of the forearm may be advised.

Surgery: In case of severe cases, open or arthroscopic surgery may be required.
