It is a condition when bone mass and bone mineral density is lower than normal.

34 million Americans are currently affected with osteopenia and by 2020 it is estimated to reach 47 million. [1]

- More common in Asians and Caucasians
- Female are at more risk than male
- Can last for a long period
-Also called: Bone loss

Osteopenia generally occurs after the age of 50 years and risk increases in women who are in the postmenopausal period. If not diagnosed on time it can turn into osteoporosis.

Causes

Deficiency of vitamin D and calcium,
Eating disorders- Anorexia and bulimia
Excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol
Medication- anti-seizure drugs, steroids
Exposure to radiations (Chemotherapy)
Medical conditions- coeliac disease (gluten or wheat allergy), lupus, arthritis

Symptoms:

Do not have any symptoms and diagnosed only after medical tests.
Diagnosis: It is done through a bone density test - dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan

Treatment

Self-Care: A nutritious diet (calcium & Vitamin D), regular exercise, quitting smoking and alcohol helps in improving bone strength.

Medications: alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), raloxifene (Evista), (Reclast, Zometa), risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia), zoledronic acid (only after doctors prescription)
