What Is A Sinus?

Sinus is cavities that are located inside a person’s skull. It is situated around the eyes and nose. These cavities help to make the skull lighter and also produce mucus that adds moisture to the nasal passage.

What Is Sinus Surgery?

Sinus surgery is primarily done to clear the pathways of the sinuses and clear blockage due to abnormal sinus structure or abnormal growths in the sinus.

Usually, surgery will be done only if the attempt of other treatments does not yield the results.

Why Is A Sinus Surgery Done?

It is normally done to remove the blockage due to thin pieces of bone, mucous membranes, nasal polyps, swollen or damaged tissue, tumors or growths, etc.

Besides this, sinus surgery will also be done in case of Sinusitis. It is a swelling of the nasal sinuses or passages.

Sinus surgery is also done if there is swelling of the nasal lining inside the nasal passage. This condition is called nasal polyps.

What Are The Types Of Sinus Surgery?

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): It is a non-invasive procedure where an endoscope is inserted into the nose to reach the opening of sinuses. The camera attached to the endoscope will help the doctor to locate the blockage. The doctor will insert the surgical tools to remove the obstructive tissues and blockage.

Image-Guided Surgery: This surgery is usually done in case of severe forms of sinus blockages. In addition to an endoscope, this surgery uses a near-three-dimensional mapping system to operate the sinus.

Caldwell-Luc Operation: It is an invasive technique and is done when there is growth present inside the sinus cavity. The surgeon will cut the upper jaw and enter the sinus cavity through this cut.

What Are The Risks Involved?

The… complications in sinus surgery are very rare. But a few of the complications are bleeding, intracranial complications, damage to eye or surrounding tissue, change to a person’s voice, infection, loss of smell or taste, etc.
