Lobar Pneumonia
All You Need To Know about Lobar Pneumonia
About
A type of pneumonia that causes acute inflammation of the entire lobe region or lung
In 95 % of cases, lobar pneumonia is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci).[1]
- Treatable by a medical professional
- Requires a medical diagnosis
- Lab tests or imaging always required
- Spreads by airborne droplets
It is an acute bacterial infection of either part of a lobe, entire lobe, or two lobes of both the lungs. It occurs as a result of over four stages: first there is congestion, which leads to consolidation and redness (red hepatization) of the lung, followed by a grey-white appearance (grey hepatization) with a liver-like consistency, and finally ending with either complete resolution or fibrosis.
Ages affected: Common in young adults
Symptoms
Symptoms include chest congestion, along with cough formation.
People may experience:
Lungs: Shortness of breath, chest pain, abscess formation, or coughing up blood at times
Whole body: Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, muscle fatigue, and aches
Also common: Headache, loss of appetite, joint pain, and low blood pressure
Treatment
Self-care: In case of mild pneumonia, taking rest and consuming fluids at regular intervals can be helpful, alongside medical treatment.
Medication: Painkillers are effective unless one is allergic to certain medicines. Lab reports and chest X-ray can help in seeking better care.
Specialists: For medical help, consult a lung specialist or a respiratory therapist. At mfine, we get in touch with the best doctors and specialists who can be consulted for a wide range of medical issues.
