What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition caused due to excess blood sugar, or glucose, in the body. Typically, the pancreas secretes a hormone that plays a crucial role in metabolizing sugar. Diabetes occurs when your body cannot make or effectively use this hormone

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – A condition caused due to low levels of sugar, or glucose, in the blood

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) – A condition caused due to high levels of sugar, or glucose, in the blood

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Increased thirst
Frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Extreme hunger
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Frequent infections

What are the major types of diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes: A condition when the body is unable to produce the hormone that lowers sugars. This can occur at any age.

Type 2 diabetes: It is a condition in which the pancreas produces minimal hormone that lowers blood sugar which in turn does not produce its intended effect. This is most prevalent in middle-aged individuals

Gestational diabetes: This kind of diabetes occurs during pregnancy only.

Why is diabetes screening important?

This test assesses abnormal sugar levels and prompts the user to start taking measures to manage it. It also helps you keep a check on the effects of the medication on your blood sugar levels. A diabetes screening can tell whether your blood sugar levels are high or low.

If uncontrolled, diabetes can damage your heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. This is why it is so important to get screened for diabetes and take steps to prevent it if you are identified to be at increased risk. The panel includes testing of hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) which gives an indication of sugar levels in the past 3 months. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) is the measure of blood sugar prior to breakfast. Postprandial blood sugar (PPBS) is measured two hours after having a meal whereas renal function test (RFT) checks the functioning of the kidneys and the extent of damage due to diabetes if the results are abnormal.
