Delayed Ejaculation: Reasons & Treatment
3 Min Read
Fact Checked
Do you enjoy sex but take extremely long to reach an orgasm (or sometimes don’t ejaculate at all)? You may be suffering from delayed ejaculation or impaired ejaculation, a condition where it takes longer than usual for men to reach sexual climax and release semen from the penis. In certain cases, there is no ejaculation at all.
One of the lesser talked-about sexual dysfunctions, delayed ejaculation is often associated with performance anxiety, and can be a temporary or a long-term problem. Sometimes, it can also point to underlying health conditions, while some others may face it due to the after-effects of surgeries and medication. Talk to an expert for guidance & support.
Symptoms Of Delayed Ejaculation
This condition is typically characterized by a longer time duration (30 minutes or more) to have an orgasm and ejaculate. In some cases, men might ejaculate while masturbating but not when they indulge in sex with their partners. Of course, acute stress and fatigue can also affect ejaculation, but if it continues, it is best to get yourself diagnosed from a good medical practitioner.
There are two types of delayed ejaculation, based on symptoms:
- Lifelong vs acquired: Lifelong ejaculation is when you suffer from this condition right from the time you attain sexual maturity. Acquired, as the name suggests, is about acquiring this condition after normal sexual functioning over a period of time.
- Generalized vs situational: Under generalized delayed ejaculation, the condition shows itself under all circumstances, while in a situational delayed ejaculation, it only applies to certain situations.
Causes Of Delayed Ejaculation
Delayed ejaculation can occur due to several reasons. First of all, it can be triggered by certain medication, surgeries or health conditions. Substance abuse as well as mental health conditions, such as stress and anxiety, could also play a major role in delayed ejaculation.
If you are going through relationship stress due to delayed ejaculation, speak to your partner and try to resolve the issue. At times, disappointment in sexual realities as compared to fantasies can also trigger delayed ejaculation. Often, men suffering from this condition have no problem during masturbation but can face it while getting intimate with their partners. In certain cases, if a man has a negative connotation of sex in his mind (due to religious or cultural reasons), delayed ejaculation is likely to occur.
Lastly, there could be certain physical issues–nerve-related disorders, prostate conditions, heart disease, urinary infections, neuropathy, low thyroid hormone, low testosterone levels and birth defects–that cause delayed ejaculation.
Risk factors
Here are a few potential risk factors for this problem:
- Older age: As you grow older, it takes longer to reach sexual climax. Hence, delayed ejaculation occurs much more, as you age.
- Stress and anxiety: Suffering from acute personal, physical or professional stress, it might affect your sex life.
- Medical conditions: If you have medical conditions such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis, the chances of delayed ejaculation may rise. At times, surgeries and some medication also impair ejaculation.
- Relationship issues: If you don’t have great communication with your partner, you might be under stress. Again, this tends to trigger delayed ejaculation.
- Substance abuse: If you are a heavy drinker or engage in substance abuse, then your chances of suffering from delayed ejaculation may go up drastically.
Treatment
Your doctor will get to the root of the problem, before suggesting the best treatment. The condition can be resolved by treating mental or physical causes. In certain cases, going for regular psychological counselling also helps to deal with feelings of fear and anxiety. Consult a doctor online in private.
Worry no more. With a little help and some care, climaxing is no longer a far-fetched dream!
