What is a Dengue test?
Dengue Fever is a viral infection that is spread via a mosquito bite. The Aedes mosquito is the common carrier of this virus and passes this infection from one person to the next. If a person notices symptoms of Dengue, it is recommended to get a Dengue fever test because Dengue can put the person’s life at risk.
Some common symptoms of Dengue are high grade viral fever, vomiting, severe joint pain, skin rashes, fatigue, low blood pressure and bleeding. Since the symptoms are similar to a common viral infection, Dengue may be often overlooked. But if left untreated, it can lead to failure in the circulatory system and liver dysfunction.
Hence, it is advisable to opt for a Dengue fever test immediately and consult your doctor for effective treatment.
Another condition called Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe form of Dengue viral fever. This condition is often life-threatening. The main symptoms of this condition are excessive bleeding in the gums, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, and blood in the urine. Clinically they will have very low blood platelet levels. In that case, it is essential to get the diagnostic test for the Dengue viral fever performed immediately to start appropriate medications.
What does the Dengue test include?
More than 25 tests are included in the Dengue test package. It assesses the risk associated with Dengue and measures platelets, RBC count. Dengue test measures the level of IgM and antigen in your body.
The Dengue fever test involves Dengue screening, a series of blood tests to check for viral antibodies, confirm the presence of Dengue, and check the platelet counts. In case of more severe symptoms of the Dengue viral fever, it is recommended to consult a doctor to understand the next steps.
The complete Dengue profile is done with the following tests:
- Dengue antibody IgM
- Dengue antigen
Blood composition helps understand if the body is fighting any infections/diseases. The values can be directly associated with your symptoms. Following tests measure the blood composition:
- Hemoglobin (Hb)
- Plateletcrit
- Mean platelet volume
- Leucocytes
- Immature granulocyte
- Absolute – lymphocyte count
- Nucleated RBC%
- Mean corpuscular hemoglobin
- Lymphocyte%
- Monocytes
- Neutrophils
- Eosinophils
- Total RBC
- RDW SD
- RDW CV
- Packed cell volume (PCV) or Hematocrit (Hct)
- Platelet count
- Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration
- Basophils
- Platelet count (Automated / verified on smear)
- Absolute – Eosinophil count
- Absolute – Monocyte count
- Absolute – Neutrophil count
Benefits of Dengue test
Dengue fever tests are recommended for patients with visible symptoms of Dengue or who have had prolonged exposure to fever. Sometimes, people are advised to undergo a diagnostic test if the Dengue-like effects and viral fever are high and recurrent. Dengue tests can detect the onset of Dengue and save you from complex conditions. An extreme condition of Dengue, if untreated, can lead to liver dysfunction and failure of the circulatory system.

Dengue test vs. Complete blood count test - which is better?
When you have tiredness, weakness but don’t know which test to take, you can go for a Complete blood count test. This test includes all the tests to check the level of blood composition. If the condition is accompanied by mild fever, symptoms of bleeding, fall in blood pressure, then it is better to go for the Dengue test since IgM antibody levels will be measured to detect if it is due to a virus.
Can the Dengue test detect COVID?
No. The Dengue test cannot detect the COVID. But both conditions are fever, body pain, and tiredness. Dengue tests can confirm only Dengue fever. COVID has to be confirmed using RT-PCR or a CT scan.
What is the treatment for Dengue fever?
Treatment of dengue fever is symptomatic. The doctor may prescribe you to take acetaminophen (paracetamol) to treat pain and fever. You should avoid taking aspirin, other salicylates, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. You may require intravenous volume replacement when Dengue hemorrhagic fever or Dengue shock syndrome.
What is the WBC count in Dengue fever?
When you have Dengue fever, the following condition will occur, and the following levels generally characterize it:
Leucopenia (White Blood Cells (WBC) < 5000 cells/mm3),
Thrombocytopenia (< 150,000 cells/mm3),
Rising hematocrit (5–10%) should not be any evidence of plasma leakage.
The presence of IgM in Dengue fever means you have got Dengue fever very recently. The IgM antibody test will be positive even for the Chikungunya test. Thus, confirmation has to be done by antigen-specific test. If IgG is positive and IgM is negative or low, that means you had Dengue sometime in the past.
What do positive IgG and IgM mean in Dengue?
The accuracy of the NS1 antigen rapid test is considered high, with a sensitivity of 55%-82% and specificity of 97%-100%. Since the NS1 quick test aims to detect Dengue NS1 antigen, it should be performed within five days of the onset of fever.
Is the Dengue test accurate?
To increase the platelet count naturally, consume green leafy vegetables, vegetable juice, coconut water, pomegranate, pumpkin, papaya leaf juice, milk, raisins, herbal tea, neem leaf juice, and wheatgrass. Since the treatment for dengue fever is symptomatic your doctor may give medication to relieve body pain and fever. The most recommended medication is acetaminophen.
