Procedure for CPK test

This test requires a blood sample which is usually collected from the vein. It should only take a few minutes to collect the sample.
A topical antiseptic is applied to the inside of your elbow to clean a small area of your skin. An elastic band is then wrapped around your upper arm to apply pressure to find a vein.
Once a vein is seen, a sterile needle is inserted to draw blood into a small tube.
When the needle is inserted, you may feel a sting; however, the pain will dissipate almost immediately.

Is CPK a definitive test?

The most specific diagnostic for muscular dystrophy is a creatine phosphokinase (CPK) measurement (MD). CPK levels that are elevated are a sign of muscular illness. Hemolysis has little effect on CPK levels since the concentration of CPK in red blood cells is negligible. CPK, like the other enzymes tested, is unaffected by liver disease.as are the other tested enzymes (e.g., aldolase, transaminases, lactate). High CPK levels represent leakage of the enzyme from the muscle cells only.

The CK-MB test is a cardiac marker that is used to help in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. It detects the presence of CK-MB in the blood, which is a combination of two variants of the enzyme phosphocreatine kinase.
